Indices spread betting FAQ

Do indices have a spread?

Yes, just like all markets, indices have a spread – meaning you’ll buy an index at slightly above the market price and sell slightly below it. With City Index, you can trade 40+ global indices with fixed spreads from just 1 point. Open your trading account to get started.

What is a spread bet on an index?

A spread bet on an index is a bet on whether it is going to head up or down in price from its current position. It’s a way of trading the market without paying tax or opening an account with a futures broker.*

You could, for example, bet £5 per point that the FTSE 100 (called the UK 100 on the City Index platform) is going to go up. Then, for every point that the index rises, you’ll make £5 – and for every point it falls, you’ll lose £5.

To get started, open your City Index account. Or, try out indices spread betting with our free trading simulator, complete with £10,000 virtual funds.

*Spread Betting is exempt from UK stamp duty and UK Capital Gains Tax. However, tax laws are subject to change and depend on individual circumstances. Please seek independent advice if necessary.
